City Council Approves Co-Naming “Danny Chen Way” with Elizabeth Street

Chinatown now memorializes one of its own – Private Danny Chen.

Henceforth, Elizabeth Street between Canal and Bayard will be known as “Danny Chen Way.” That’s right, six months after Community Board 3 approved the designation, City Council rubber stamped the measure.

“This was a vote for tolerance, acceptance, and above all, respect,” said Council Member Margaret Chin. “Private Danny Chen Way will be an enduring testament to the life of this remarkable young man, and serve as a powerful reminder that bullying and racism have no place in our society.”

Chen shot himself while serving in Afghanistan in October 2011 after being harassed by fellow soldiers, eight of whom were charged. The incident became a rallying point for the local Chinatown community, whose tireless efforts ultimately led to legislation requiring the military to address hazing in its ranks.

As a general rule, community boards at the outset of the process require 75% of residents in the designated area to endorse such co-namings. Well over 80% on the little block inked their support. Furthermore, 1,585 signatures were reportedly collected from around the Five Boroughs.
