2010 Asian American Essay Contest Scholarship and Internship Programs

Essay Topic:
What does it mean to be Asian-American? Describe a personal experience that gave you the feeling of greatest achievement or satisfaction because of the challenges you met as an Asian American.

Eligibility:
Applicant must be of Asian-American descent.

  • Applicant must reside in the state of New Jersey.
  • Applicant must be a college-bound high school senior.

Essay Criteria:

  • Essay is to be two (2) pages, doubled spaced, with 1 inch margins. (450-500 words)
  • Five (5) copies of the essay must be submitted with the Essay Application.
  • Individuals will be judged on the criteria of essay.

Judging Criteria:

  • Theme and Content 50% – relevance and insight into the essay topic, validity of ideas
    and thoroughness of presentation;
  • Organization and Development 15% – clear and logical development of essay;
  • Grammar and Mechanics 15%;
  • Style 10% – effectiveness and flow of writing; and
  • Community Service and Extracurricular Activities 10%.
  • Application must be legible.

Submitting Procedures and Deadline:

  • All essays must be postmarked by April 30, 2010.

Awards:

  • Scholarships will be awarded at the OCA-NJ Asian American Heritage Luncheon to
    be held on May 22, 2010 at Noodle Chu Restaurant, Parsippany NJ. Awards are up to
    $1000.
  • NOTE: Do not put your name on the essay. Be sure your e-mail address is on the upper right
    hand corner of each page.
